Final Itinerant Workshop on the Conservation and Management of Persian, Timurid and Mogul Architecture

6-12 April 2009

This workshop is being held jointly by the World Heritage Centre, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the UNESCO New Delhi Office and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. It is the final workshop in a series which brought together site managers from a selection of World Heritage sites in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, along with cultural heritage authorities to increase cooperation between the heritage professionals in the region in regard to the many similarities in types of heritage.

One important session of this final Workshop is co-organized with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in India, the Indian Central Public Works Department and Delhi Municipal Corporation, focusing on the implementation process of a large conservation and regeneration scheme restoring parts of the World Heritage Site Humayun Tomb, the related Sunder Nursery area and the urban village of Nizamuddin in Delhi. This project of the Aga Khan Trust in India will create employment for local craftsmen and will be based on hands-on tests for tile restoration (kilns are being built and tiles burnt, conservation testing is undertaken, etc.). In this process, this final Workshop is planned to display the hands-on work and to share and debate the various technical and philosophical aspects linked to this conservation.

The workshops are organized as on-site training programmes held at specifically chosen sites, most of which are World Heritage properties or sites included on Tentative Lists.
