IMPACT publication: Sustainable Tourism and the Preservation of the World Heritage Site of the Ifugao Rice Terraces Philippines

Sustainable Tourism

This publication focuses on the impacts of tourism on the Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras, an outstanding model of sustainable use of limited land resources, using traditional knowledge-based technology that has evolved over the last two millennia. In 1995, the site was inscribed in the World Heritage List, in recognition of the living organically-evolved cultural landscape shaped by sacred traditions and the ingenuity of the Ifugao people. The site was added to the list of World Heritage Sites in Danger in 2001 as uncontrolled tourism and the introduction of open-market economy threatened both the natural heritage of the province and the traditional practices of its inhabitants.
