From July 1 to 3, 2015, University of Zimbabwe hosted the Biennial Conference of the Association of Southern African Professional Archaeologists (ASAPA). With the financial support of UNESCO Office for Southern Africa (ROSA) and other partners, UZ successfully met the challenge of gathering a large number (approximately 250) of professionals and students from Southern African Region and beyond to participate in this major event.

The theme of the conference: “Towards an interdisciplinary framework for southern African archaeology, Taking stock of archaeological thought, methods and practice in southern Africa” offered to the UNESCO ROSA the opportunity to make a presentation on the unusual topic of World Heritage and Archaeology.

UNESCO ROSA’s presentation and participation in the Round Table on World Heritage and Stakeholders generated a lot of interest as participants were eager to know more about the 1972 Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.

Aside from meeting archaeologists from the region and beyond, cooperation opportunities with bilateral partners that arose on the occasion of this event appear as one of the major outcomes of this activity.
