Culture And Climate Change-related Emergencies: New Realities, New Perspectives

Event date and time: 13 September 2023, 13:15-14:45 (UTC +3)
Room : Rock Art Room, Hotel Al Faisaliah

The past years have witnessed the growing impact of disasters and climate change on cultural heritage around the globe – from the hurricanes and cyclones in Belize, Malawi and Vanuatu, the fires in Chili and flooding in Pakistan and Yemen, to the earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria. These disasters reaffirmed the continued importance of the culture sector’s preparedness and capacity to respond to emergencies.

In this context, the roundtable aims to address key issues for preparedness and response of the culture sector not only to increase resilience during the emergencies but identify ways in which culture can contribute to the recovery. In particular, the roundtable will discuss means to enhance emergency preparedness at cultural heritage sites, the use of ICTs and new technologies, as well as the role of intangible cultural heritage in disaster risk reduction and strengthening community resilience.
