In Memoriam: Dr Janice Lindsay

The UNESCO World Heritage Centre was saddened to learn of the death of Dr Janice Lindsay, Principal Director, Culture and Creative Industries Policy Division in the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport (MCGES) in Jamaica.

Dr Lindsay was a Cultural Heritage Development Specialist focusing on the economic development of tangible and intangible heritage assets. She was also formerly Director of Arts and Culture at the University of Technology, Jamaica.

Dr Lindsay completed a Ph.D. in World Cultural Heritage Studies at the University of Tsukuba in Japan (2007-2011), and held a Master of Arts degree (2005) in Heritage Studies and a Bachelor of Arts in Media and Communication (1996) from the University of the West Indies, Mona.

She authored several articles published in heritage and sustainable development journals and delivered presentations on aspects of cultural heritage at local and international conferences. Awards given to Dr Lindsay include the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, Government of Japan Scholarship (2007) and the University of Tsukuba Certificate of Merit Award for Doctoral Research (2010). Dr. Lindsay was one of two representatives from Jamaica to serve on UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee.

Dr Lindsay was known for her kindness and dedication as a professional. The staff of the World Heritage Centre, with whom Dr Lindsay had established relations of close cooperation and friendship, extends its heartfelt condolences to her friends and family.
