With the slogan “Their Future is Our Future – A Healthy Planet for Migratory Birds and People”, the World Migratory Bird Day 2017 on 10 May aims to highlight the interdependence of people and nature, and more specifically people and migratory birds, as they share the same planet and the same limited resources.

For more than ten years now, World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) has raised awareness about the need for conservation of migratory birds and their habitats, about the threats they face, their ecological importance, and about the need for international cooperation to conserve them.

On the occasion of the World Migratory Bird Day, the World Heritage Centre wishes to draw attention to the importance of World Heritage sites for migratory birds.  A number of sites across the five continents contain critical habitats and refuges vital for migratory birds, such as:

The World Heritage Centre encourages all stakeholders to help conserve these sites working closely with the Secretariats of the seven biodiversity related Conventions, including with the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), to improve the conservation of protected areas relevant for migratory birds along their flyways.
