Report published following Workshop on World Heritage and Human Rights

The report resulting from the workshop held in Oslo, Norway from 1 to 3 April 2014 on the theme “Building capacity to support rights-based approaches in the World Heritage Convention: Learning from practice” is now available (see attachment below).

In April this year an international invitation-only workshop was held for about 30 IUCN, ICCROM and ICOMOS experts representing most continents.

The overall goal of the project has been to promote recognition and understanding of “good practice” approaches to human rights and their enabling conditions in the World Heritage arena, with the specific objectives to:

1. Document and analyze how rights issues have been addressed in selected initiatives making progress around community engagement in the World Heritage field,
2. Identify enabling conditions and specific opportunities for strengthening rights-based approaches, and
3. Explore opportunities for Advisory Body action to support and facilitate rights-based approaches reflective of country specific needs and opportunities.
