The session on “Heritage and resilience” will take place on the morning of 22 May as a ‘featured event’ at the next UN-ISDR Global Platform (Geneva, 19-23 May 2013). The Global Platform is the most important event gathering the world’s community in the field of disaster risk reduction (DRR) and an important milestone in the consultations leading to the post-2015 development agenda.

The session is a real first in this context and aims at raising the awareness of the DRR community of the importance of heritage and the need to consider it in DRR policies and programmes. It will emphasize the intrinsic value of heritage and the extent to which it is affected or threatened by disasters, but most of all it will demonstrate the very significant positive contribution that heritage, in all its forms, can make to building resilient communities, through tangible goods and services but also by providing psychological support to communities in distress.

A background document prepared by ICOMOS/ICORP in consultation with ISDR, UNESCO and ICCROM, which will be distributed widely during the Global Platform, will set the context for the session. The session will be organized as panel discussion, with a moderator and questions and answers from the floor in an expected duration of 90 minutes.
