Case Studies on Climate Change and World Heritage

This publication highlights the impacts of climate change on 26 natural and cultural World Heritage properties, along with ongoing and planned adaptation and mitigation measures. There are five chapters on glaciers, marine biodiversity, terrestrial biodiversity, archaeological sites, and historic cities and settlements, and sites featured include the Tower of London, Kilimanjaro National Park and the Great Barrier Reef. The publication highlights the fact that even well recognized and protected icons of the natural and cultural world are threatened by climate change, and that public awareness and support is crucial for addressing these impacts.

World Heritage: Challenges for the Millennium


This publication provides analysis of more than three decades of the implementation of the World Heritage Convention and highlights a number of its successes and challenges. The result of a collective effort of many partners and professionals, it provides a wealth of information, including more than 100 photographs, 26 maps and numerous tables and graphs. It is intended for the general reader as well as heritage conservation specialists.

UNESCO World Heritage Desk Diary 2008

The UNESCO World Heritage Desk Diary 2008 has just been published. Featuring a useful week-at-a-glance design, it is illustrated with 77 colour photos of World Heritage sites, each accompanied with a short caption. It also introduces the Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage; its objectives, the selection criteria, the institutions which ensure its implementation, as well as the list of States Parties that are signatories to the Convention. All texts are in English, French and Spanish.

The restoration of King Gbehanzin Palace – Royal Palaces of Abomey
Edited by Junzo Kawada, Published by CRATerre-ENSAG and UNESCO World Heritage Centre.
This publication describes the first restoration project of a World Heritage site in Benin, financed through a cooperation agreement between Japan and UNESCO. It contains articles by the main experts from Benin, Italy and Japan who carried out the restoration of the palace of King Gbehanzin. This restoration is an example of a dynamic partnership involving UNESCO, Japan and Benin in the valorization and development of local know-how in the safeguarding of World Heritage properties.
