Consolidation of the niche of the Small Buddha
The aims of this project were the consolidation of the cliffs and niches, the conservation of mural paintings in the Buddhist caves, the definition of the archaeological zone through soundings, as well as the creation of a map and 3D model and the creation of a preliminary Master Plan of the Site.
Phase I of the project was completed January 2005. Recommendations for the second phase of the project were released by the Expert Working Group for the Preservation of the Bamiyan Site following their last meeting in Tokyo in December 2004.
Results:
- Consolidated cliffs and niches
- Protected caves and mural paintings
- Increased national capacity in the conservation of cultural heritage
- Income generated and training provided for Afghans of various backgrounds
- Basis created for the inception of cultural tourism to Bamiyan
