Description
Sited on the western extremity of Barra Point, at the mouth of the Gambia River, the Fort was built in 1827 to protect British political and commercial interests in Senegambia, to control shipping entering and leaving the Gambia River , to subdue the local Kingdom of Barra, and to consolidate the suppression of the slave trade in West Africa following the British Government's passing of the Abolition Act of 1807. The Fort is a regular rectangular fortification, with circular bastions at the four corners, containing barracks within the curtain walls. Its design is based on British coastal defences built to counter French attack during World War 2, following the surrender of France in 1940, when the French naval base at Dakar became a threat to allied shipping in mid-Atlantic, and was equipped with modern artillery and new gun emplacements.
