At Komodo National Park Indonesia's Forestry Department and local NGOs are working on strategies to help poor local communities benefit from their natural resources in a more sustainable way. Komodo is world-renowned for the endangered Komodo dragon and an important marine reserve with more than 1,000 species of tropical fish, invertebrates, and mammals. Ujung Kulon houses a unique volcanic environment, the largest area of lowland rainforest in the Java plain, and the last 60 Javan rhinoceros in the world.

Objectives

  • In Komodo, the goal is to address threats to marine biodiversity by professionalising existing tourism services and developing new tourism products, such as an aquatic nature trail, to foster awareness in areas of the park that are severely threatened by destructive fishing practices.
  • Similarly In Ujung Kulon, the goal is to build a stronger conservation constituency to protect the park from future threats by planning and understanding the tourism market.
