At its 9th Session, the Bureau of the World Heritage Committee recommended that Benin present a request for inscription of this property on the List of World Heritage in Danger in view of the considerable damage caused by the 1984 tornado. 

By letter of 16 September 1985 the Authorities of Benin forwarded such a request together with a request for technical co-peration amounting to 20,000 $. In accordance with the relevant procedure, this request will be submitted for approval to the Chairman of the World Heritage Committee.

Analysis and Conclusion by World Heritage Centre and the Advisory Bodies in 1985

Taking account in particular of the considerable damage caused by the 1984 tornado and the urgency of the work needed to preserve the site, the Committee decided to include the Royal palaces of Abomey (Benin) on the List of World Heritage in Danger.

30. Taking account in particular of the considerable damage caused by the 1984 tornado and the urgency of the work needed to preserve the site, the Committee decided to include the Royal Palaces of Abomey (Benin) on the List of World Heritage in Danger.

41. The Committee approved two requests concerning properties inscribed on the List of World Heritage in Danger:

- Benin - Royal Palaces of Abomey: $20,000

- Zaire: Garamba National Park: $20,000

The Committee authorized the Bureau to approve an additional amount of $20,000 under technical cooperation for this property subject to the receipt of an appropriate request.
