Asia & West Pacific Network For Urban Conservation (AWPNUC) Announces 6th Symposium

21-25 November 1997

The Symposium will focus on:

  • Grassroots mobilization and professionalism in conservation work
  • Conservation politics and policies
  • Economic development, conservation and quality of life

The symposium program includes on-site case studies at local cultural and historic sites with visits to the National Palace Museum, Di-Hwa Street, Chingshan Temple, Lungshan Temple, Pao-An Temple, Confucius Temple and Shih-Lin Botanical Garden.

There will be a youth forum dedicated to guiding and promoting the work of young professional enthusiasts in the field of conservation. Tentative post-conference workshop will take participants to Kinmen, an island only 2,100 meters from the coast of mainland China.

The organizer Yaoshan Cultural Foundation was founded in 1986 with the primary objective of promoting historic conservation and cultural education in the rapidly changing environment of contemporary Taiwan. The foundation engages in a broad range of conservation activites, including sponsoring public seminars and lecture series, leading domestic and international study tours and field site visits, preparing government briefings and legislative lobbying as well as sponsoring research and conservation efforts at particular historic sites throughout the island.

Yaoshan specializes in grassroots organising -- building diverse teams of concerned individuals and groups to combat the deterioration of Taiwan's cultural and historic environment. Bringing together concerned local residents, interested building and planning professionals and government officials, Yaoshan has been instrumental in the rescue and restoration of numerous sites, including Di Hwa Street, Taipei's oldest shop house district, SanHsia, a historic settlement town in northern Taiwan, and Meinon, a traditional village in the southern portion of the island.

Previous AWPNUC Symposia were held in Penang (1991), Adelaide (1992), Hanoi (1993), Nara (1994) and Yogyakarta (1995). Member organisations take turns to host the Symposium each year.
