UNESCO Celebrates International #MuseumWeek

19-25 June 2017
#MuseumWeek (09/06/2017)

Museums preserve heritage and stimulate creativity in all its forms.  Most importantly, museums create and transmit values associated with their collections. In our globalised world, where millions of people are travelling and migrating across borders every day, museums not only act as custodians of shared heritage, but also as key spaces for encounters, exchange, and the rediscovery of ourselves and of others.

Whether in cities, rural settings or online, museums are available to everyone; from local populations and tourists alike. Museums inspire pride in our ancestral traditions. They also provide immigrants and refugees opportunities to access their cultural legacies.  With their immense capacity for outreach and exchange, museums act as unifiers for different segments of societies, nations and communities, making them one of the most powerful agents of cultural diplomacy and intercultural dialogue.

To celebrate museums, galleries, cultural institutions worldwide, UNESCO is officially associated with the 2017 MuseumWeek, the world’s biggest social media campaign around museums.

The event
Hosted from 19 - 25 June, #MuseumWeek will offer the opportunity for museums, galleries, archives and libraries to celebrate culture over 7 days, 7 themes, 7 hashtags! This is an occasion to share and discuss museums as our common passion with the public on social networks, using hashtags dedicated to the event. #MuseumWeek 2017.

A tribute to women
#MuseumWeek is committed to the cause of gender equality and will be dedicated in 2017 to women around the world. Thus, on top of the daily hashtags mentioned here below and at any time during the week, cultural institutions are invited to share publications around the “Women and Culture” theme with the hashtag #WomenMW in order to underline the role of women in culture (yesterday, today, tomorrow).
