St. Maarten to host UNESCO Meeting on Capacity Building on Heritage Conservation in the Caribbean Small Islands Developing States (SIDS)

Contributing to the 2014 International Year for the Small Islands Developing States (SIDS 2014), UNESCO and the Government of St. Maarten, through the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports Affairs will host a meeting on Capacity Building on Heritage Conservation in the Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The main objective of this meeting is to strengthen professional capacities for the effective implementation of the 1972 World Heritage Convention in the Caribbean Small Islands Developing States with a view to increasing the representation of sites on the World Heritage List. The meeting will bring together representatives/experts from 22 Caribbean states (Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Barbados, Belize, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Curacao, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Suriname, the Bahamas and Trinidad and Tobago) as well as representatives from Advisory Bodies, the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the Field Offices in Kingston and Havana.

During the meeting participants from 22 Caribbean states will review advances of the Kingston Action Plan 2013 (KAP), and discuss the Caribbean Capacity Building Strategy in preparation of the upcoming Review Meeting of the World Heritage Caribbean Action Plan, scheduled for September 2014, as well as discuss the possibility of preparing the Eastern Caribbean Coastal Fortifications serial trans-boundary nomination. The focus group on Eastern Caribbean Coastal Fortifications includes representatives from Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Maarten and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.This meeting is part of the recommendations coming out of the Caribbean Training Courses in the Preparation of Nomination Dossiers for World Heritage held in Jamaica (2012) and Antigua and Barbuda (2013) as outlined in the Kingston Action Plan.

The meeting will be organized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports Affairs of St. Maarten in collaboration with the World Heritage Centre and UNESCO Field Offices in Kingston and Havana, as part of the Caribbean Capacity Building Programme for World Heritage.
