UNF launched a “Friends of World Heritage” partnership program in September 2003 during the World Parks Congress in Durban , South Africa . A newsletter and web site were set up to support the program and inform the public about the advantages of becoming a “member” of World Heritage.

Objective
- Build the capacity of World Heritage site management to deal with tourism.
- Raise public awareness of World Heritage and build pride with local communities and visitors through conservation education.
- Train local community members in tourism related activities to participate in the industry and receive tourism's benefits.
