Zhang Rouran

PROGRAMME COORDINATOR

Rouran Zhang is Programme Coordinator at the Africa Unite of World Heritage Centre, UNESCO Headquarters, where his key duties include coordinating the establishment of heritage education centres across Africa as part of the Priority Africa Flagship Programme, supporting African experts through the creation and operationalization of a Pan-African Network of ICOMOS experts and mentees and facilitating the development of joint training and capacity-building for African experts and professionals.

Prior to his role at UNESCO, Zhang was a research associate at the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, University of Cambridge, and served as an associate professor at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Shenzhen University, China. He also holds roles as the Vice-President of the ICOMOS International Cultural Tourism Scientific Committee) and as an expert member of the ICOMOS-IFLA International Scientific Committee on Cultural Landscapes.

He earned his PhD in Interdisciplinary Cross-Cultural Research from the Centre of Heritage and Museum Studies at the Australian National University. His contributions to the heritage field are evident in his over 30 publications in books and academic journals, including his monograph, "Chinese Heritage Sites and Their Audiences: the Power of the Past" (2020), published by Routledge.
