Ville fondée sur le mont de Zerhoun par Idriss I fondateur du ler état Islamique au Maroc à la fin du VIIème siècle. Elle revêt un caractère spirituel qui a permis l'établissement de plusieurs monuments et sanctuaires religieux dont le plus important est le mausolée Moulay Idriss. La ville se caractérise par une architecture Islamique élaborée et conçue selon un style parfaitement intégré à l'environnement culturel local
