UNESCO and NOUH sign agreement for preservation of Historic Cairo

On 11 June, a protocol agreement for a preservation and management project for Historic Cairo (Egypt) was signed by Mr. Samir Gharib, Head of the National Organization for Urban Harmony (NOUH), and Dr. Tarek Shawky, Head of the UNESCO Cairo office, on behalf of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

Attendees included H.E Mohammed Ibrahim, Minister of State for Antiquities, H.E Mohammed Saber Arab, Minister of Culture, G. Seif al-Islam Abd al-Bary, deputy of the Governor of Cairo for the western district, and other professionals and representatives of Egyptian institutions.

Historic Cairo was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1979. A project for the  elaboration of a conservation/regeneration plan for Historic Cairo, called Urban Regeneration for Historic Cairo (URHC), was initiated by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, dedicated to the safeguarding of this cultural heritage and aiming at defining a more appropriate and efficient management system of the site.

The key objectives of the project include preparing conservation and management plans; setting up an institutional framework to develop sustainable policy; creating a shared information platform for urban conservation; and launching public-awareness activities.

As a result of the project, Historic Cairo World Heritage site will be recognized and protected through an efficient management system, with coordination among the different institutions involved.
