The renewed agreement outlines the mandate and responsibilities in the field of World Heritage of the Regional Heritage Management Training Centre “Lucio Costa” located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as a Category 2 Centre under the auspices of UNESCO.

The Lucio Costa Centre is recognized for its mandate focused on reinforcing the capacities of Member States for the conservation and management of natural and cultural World Heritage properties, and to improving the implementation of the World Heritage Convention in the Portuguese and Spanish-speaking countries of South America, Africa and Asia.

The main objective of the Lucio Costa Centre is to contribute to capacity building in the field of World Heritage management, and serving as a platform for international cooperation to exchange experiences and disseminate best practices among the participating countries. The renewed agreement also outlines that the Lucio Costa Centre will draw on expertise from national, regional and international universities and research centres, and will host meetings, conferences, training workshops and courses in accordance with its annual work plan.

The Lucio Costa Centre was formally created by resolution 35C/20 of the 35th UNESCO General Assembly in Paris (July 2009), followed by the signing of the first cooperation agreement between UNESCO and the Government of Brazil in July 2010.  Its status as a Category 2 Centre under the auspices of UNESCO was renewed by 202 EX/Decision 18.1.C of the UNESCO Executive Board in 2017 based on a positive evaluation of its contribution thus far to UNESCO’s strategic objectives.

The renewed agreement was signed on 13 June 2018 at UNESCO’s Headquarters in Paris by UNESCO’s Director-General, Ms Audrey Azoulay, and the Minister of Culture, Mr Sérgio Sá Leitão.

There are currently eight Category 2 Centres under the auspices of UNESCO around the world that support the fulfilment of UNESCO’s strategic objectives in the field of World Heritage.
