The World Heritage Centre is receiving correspondence from many NGOs and concerned citizens regarding a proposed high-rise project, and other matters, within the boundaries of the World Heritage property “Historic Centre of Vienna”.

The World Heritage Centre is aware of this situation and is following the issue closely with the State Party, as well as the Advisory Bodies to the World Heritage Convention (ICOMOS and ICCROM). At its 37th session (Phnom Penh, 2013) the Committee requested the Austrian authorities ‘to halt any redevelopment higher than existing structures until an evaluation has been made by the Advisory Bodies’, and requested the authorities ‘to inform, in conformity with Paragraph 172 of the Operational Guidelines, the World Heritage Centre of any additional major urban development projects as well as amendments to current projects that may have a negative impact on the World Heritage properties, before any planning permissions are granted’.

Furthermore, the World Heritage Committee will review the state of conservation of the site at its forthcoming 39th session (Bonn, 28 June – 8 July 2015),. The State of Conservation report regarding “Historic Centre of Vienna” is available on the UNESCO website at the following link: https://whc.unesco.org/en/soc/3329.
