Further information about damage to two World Heritage sites in Indonesia

The conservation community mourns the loss of several staff members of the Gunung Leuser National Park, one of the three national parks within the Tropical Rainforest of Sumatra World Heritage site.

According to most recent information, the Tropical Rainforest of Sumatra and the Ujung Kulon National Park have not sustained important damage during the recent tsunami disaster.

The Gunung Leuser National Park: Several staff members of the Nature Conservation Unit have perished or are reported missing. The Nature Conservation Unit’s offices in Banda Aceh has disappeared while the offices in Tapak Tuan have been damaged. It is reported that the Kutacane office in Southeast Aceh was not touched. The Park itself has not sustained major damage.

The Kerinci Seblat National Park: The northern coast of the Park has been affected by the water but no major destruction is being reported at this point.

The Bukit Barisan Seletan National Park: This area of the Tropical Rainforest of Sumatra has not been affected by the disaster and has not suffered any damages.

The Ujung Kulon National Park: This World Heritage site, located on the extreme south-western tip of Java, was not affected by the earthquake and tsunami.
