9-10 August 2012

The Australian Committee of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (ACIUCN) is organizing a Symposium 9th-10th August 2012 in North Queensland to convene experts from across government, academic and NGO sectors to discuss strategic issues for World Heritage in Australia.  It will be the third in ACIUCN’s successful ‘Science informing Policy’ Symposium Series.

In this 40th year of the Convention, it is timely to celebrate what has been achieved, remember the true meaning of World Heritage status and look at  both current and emerging challenges to World Heritage preservation.

This is a major event which will gather World Heritage experts and mark the 40th year of this Convention, which has been so prominent in Australia’s environmental history.

The Symposium will be held in partnership with the Wet Tropics Management Authority, the Australian Conservation Foundation and other partners related to Australia’s natural and natural/cultural sites.

The Symposium will take place over two full days In Cairns where two World Heritage sites meet – the Wet Tropics of Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef.
