The International Academy on Sustainable Development is holding a workshop on the Integrated Management of UNESCO Designations that will take place in Turin from 8 to 13 October 2017.

The aim of this year’s workshop, the third in a series, is to advance the professional and institutional capacities of managing authorities, communities and other relevant practitioners in the integrated management of UNESCO designations, in order to increase the social, cultural and economic benefits for local communities, and with an emphasis on achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Organised by the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe in cooperation with Centro Studi Silvia Santagata in Turin, it will focus on the following designations: World Heritage, Biosphere Reserves included in the Man and the Biosphere Programme, the UNESCO Creative Cities Network and, for the first time, the Lists and Register of the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage and the Global Geoparks Network. There will be a particular focus on multiple designated areas (territories hosting more than one UNESCO designation), in order to analyse the opportunities, challenges and experiences in managing different designations.

The workshop will address the roles of UNESCO designations in achieving the SDGs with reference to the UN 2030 Agenda and the recognition and interpretation of territorial and community capital, integrated management of cultural and natural resources, and tools and good practices for supporting sustainable development through UNESCO designations.

Participants

Local authorities and other relevant local actors responsible for World Heritage properties, Biosphere Reserves, UNESCO Creative Cities, elements inscribed in the Lists and Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage and Global Geoparks.

Scholars, researchers and staff from international organisations may also apply.
