Objectives
The first teacher-training workshop organized in Guinea in the framework of the "World Heritage in Young Hands" project.
Workshop objectives
- Introduce World Heritage Education to UNESCO Associated Schools in Guinea;
- To familiarize the educators and their young pupils with the exceptional universal value of the cultural and natural sites inscribed on the World Heritage List;
- To acquire new skills necessary to contribute to the conservation of the protected sites through the legislation of the country as well as through the texts of the World Heritage Convention;
- To promote new attitudes and a permanent commitment towards the preservation of global, national and local heritage, for the present as well as for the future generations;
- To make students and teachers protectors and promoters of cultural and natural diversity of the planet through international cooperation.
Outcome
The participants of the workshop agreed that the major difficulty of the World Heritage Education is its introduction and integration to all grades of every school so as to reach the students of the whole world.
The participants appreciated and were satisfied with the scientific, educational and pedagogic contents of the Kit.
Recommendations
The participants of the Workshop recommended:
To UNESCO
- Editing and distributing the Kit in the whole world, for every school and to all grades;
- To organize a sub-regional seminar for the UNESCO Associated Schools in order to exchange ideas and experiences on the educational challenges of the international and World Heritage teaching;
- To support a creation of a network of UNESCO Associated Schools between the neighboring countries of the rivers in Senegal and Gambia.
To the Government
- To integrate international education to the school curriculum as well as to the training of teachers.
- Cherishing the inscription of the Mount Nimba to the World Heritage List, the workshop recommends to study the ways for better preserving the important ecosystem of the site despite its exploitation by the scientists and tourists.
To schools and teachers
- A large distribution of the results of workshop with a systematic expansion of its acquisitions to all teachers and students
To the Guinean National Commission for UNESCO
- To distribute the results of the Kit to the attention of all UNESCO Associated Schools;
- To contact their colleagues in the neighboring countries of the rivers in Senegal and Gambia in order to create a Associated Schools' network.

3 regional coordinators of continuing formation, 5 elementary school teachers, 6 representatives of the UNESCO Associated Secondary Schools, 2 representatives of professional schools, 5 representatives from the Guinean National Commission for UNESCO and a representative of the MAB (Man and the Biosphere) National Committee.
