Information presented to the Bureau of the World Heritage Committee in 2000
New information: The Secretariat has been informed on several occasions of a project to construct a huge sport-stadium near the Baroque Castle of Klessheim close to the World Heritage site. The Secretariat has repeatedly asked the Austrian authorities for a report on the possible impact of this project on the World Heritage site of the Historic Centre of the City of Salzburg. To date, the requested report has not been submitted to the Secretariat.
The Bureau requests the Austrian authorities to submit a report on the possible impact of the project of a sports stadium adjacent to the Baroque Castle of Klessheim on the World Heritage site of the Historic Centre of the City of Salzburg before 15 September 2000, in order that it may be examined by the Bureau at its twenty-fourth extraordinary session.
Conservation issues presented to the World Heritage Committee in 2000
The Austrian authorities submitted in writing - as requested by the twenty-fourth session of the Bureau - their views which they presented orally during the Bureau with regard to a project to construct a huge sport-stadium near the Baroque Castle of Klessheim close to the World Heritage site Historic Centre of the City of Salzburg (Austria). In their views, the project neither forms part of the Castle of Klessheim, nor of the World Heritage site. Moreover, the distance between the planned stadium and the buffer zone of the site is over three kilometers and no direct line of sight exists. Furthermore, the height of the building has been reduced in the latest design version. These views also confirm the views of ICOMOS as expressed during the Bureau session.
Decisions adopted by the Committee in 2000
24 BUR IV.B.57
Historic Centre of the City of Salzburg (Austria)
The Bureau noted the advice of ICOMOS that the proposed construction of a sports stadium at some three kilometres from the World Heritage city of Salzburg would not have an adverse impact on the World Heritage site and that there would be no direct line of sight between the two. The Observer of Austria confirmed the view of ICOMOS. The Bureau, however, requested the Austrian authorities to submit this view in writing by 15 September 2000 so that at its twenty-fourth extraordinary session the Bureau could be informed accordingly.
