Joint International Symposium: Involving Communities for Better Conservation and Management of Asian World Heritage Sites

10-12 September 2012

An International Symposium is to be held in Buyeo, the Republic of Korea from 10 to 12 September to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention.

The symposium will be jointly hosted by the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea (CHA), Chungchungnam-do Province, and the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, and organized by ICOMOS-Korea with the support of UNESCO/ Republic of Korea Funds-in-Trust. The symposium will focus on Involving Communities for Better Conservation and Management of World Heritage Sites in Asia, where local political cultures differ from those of the West.

The symposium will gather international experts from various sectors including ICOMOS National Committees in Asia, ICCROM, and the governmental sectors of Norway and Laos, among others.

During the symposium, various case studies will be presented to seek specific and practical methods for involving communities in World Heritage conservation and management, in particular Kathmandu Valley, Nepal as a living heritage. The Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras will be shown as a worthy example for community involvement in site management, which in this case helped lead to removing the property from the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2012.

Throughout the symposium, UNESCO World Heritage Centre, the CHA and ICOMOS Korea envisage a list of possible recommendations for institutionalizing the issues of community involvement in World Heritage conservation which, hopefully in the long-term, could be referred to for the revision of the current Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention.
