Community involvement in valuing and managing monuments and sites

22-24 January 2014

The Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation (KU Leuven) is very pleased to invite you to the Thematic Week to be held at the Arenberg Castle (Auditorium 01.07) from 22 to 24 January 2014 on the topic : “Community involvement in valuing and managing monuments and sites”.

The value of heritage for society is increasingly underscored. This goes hand in hand with a growing interest for the involvement of local communities (the heirs of that local heritage) in the management plans of heritage sites. However, the discourse of community participation is very ambitious and not easy to apply. The 2014 Thematic Week will overview the origin of this discourse. Problems and shortcomings in relation to community involvement will be addressed and challenging practices will be evaluated. The field of immovable heritage seems to lag back in involving community in valuing and managing heritage compared to other heritage fields. This is a good reason to widen the focus for this debate.

Participation in the conference is free , but please register via mail (limited capacity):  rlicc@asro.kuleuven.be
