As-Salt Eclectic Architecture (1865-1925), Origins and Evolution of an Architectural Language in the Levant (Jordan)

The World Heritage Committee,

1. Having examined Documents WHC/17/41.COM/8B and WHC/17/41.COM/INF.8B1,
2. Defers the examination of the nomination of As-Salt Eclectic Architecture (1865-1925), Origins and Evolution of an Architectural Language in the Levant, Jordan, to the World Heritage List in order to allow the State Party, with the advice of ICOMOS and the World Heritage Centre if requested, to:
   1. Develop a comparative analysis including similar properties in the Levant and in the area of influence of the Ottoman Empire,
   2. Redefine the criteria, in order to demonstrate what makes this architectural heritage important or exceptional among other historic cities in the region, as the cradle of a new amalgamated expression of different styles,
   3. Modify the boundaries of the nominated property, in order to be read as parts of a coherent whole,
   4. Further elaborate on the definition of the Outstanding Universal Value of this architectural heritage, in order to be considered an exceptional case in the process of modernisation;
3. Considers that any revised nomination would need to be considered by an expert mission to the site;
4. Encourages the State Party to consider seeking ICOMOS’ advice to address the above-mentioned recommendations.
