First Extraordinary Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage

At its first session in Algiers (Algeria), November 2006, the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage accepted the generous offer of China to host an extraordinary session of the Committee (Decision 1.COM 8). During this session, the Intergovernmental Committee will pursue the discussions initiated in Algiers. 

The main participants of the first extraordinary session of the Intergovernmental Committee will be the 24 Members of the Committee. 

Participants in the meeting also include Mme Françoise Rivière, Assistant Director-General for Culture, Mr Francesco Bandarin, Director of the World Heritage Centre, Mounir Bouchenaki, Director General of ICCROM and Michael Petzet, President of ICOMOS, as well as observers and ambassadors from several Member States.

The main items of the agenda are:

  • the selection criteria for inscription of intangible heritage on the lists of the Convention;
  • the incorporation of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in the Representative List;
  • the use of the Fund for the Safeguarding of the ICH;
  • international assistance;
  • the accreditation of Advisory Organizations;
  • the visibility of the Committee's action.
