The World Heritage Centre expresses concerns over on-going bushfires at Fraser Island World Heritage area in Australia, the largest sand island in the world, and solidarity with the people affected by the blaze.

The UNESCO World Heritage Centre has been receiving expressions of concern over the possible impact of the bushfire on the World Heritage property “Fraser Island”. The property, located just off the east coast of Australia, was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1992 and is also a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and Ramsar site. The World Heritage Centre is in close communication and collaboration with the Australian authorities, who continue to monitor the situation and are taking all feasible measures to fight against the fire and assess any potential impacts on the Outstanding Universal Value of the property.
