World Heritage Centre expresses condolences for victims of earthquake in China
The Director of the World Heritage Centre expresses her deep condolences at the loss of lives and destructions caused by the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck China’s southwestern province of Sichuan on Tuesday 8 August.
According to initial reports, the epicentre of the earthquake in southwestern Sichuan province was in the mountainous Jiuzhaigou County, which includes the Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic and Historic Interest Area World Heritage property.
While the impact of the earthquake and its extent are yet to be evaluated, the World Heritage Centre expresses its solidarity with the team of rescue workers and stands ready to provide any assistance in the assessment of damages, as well as support to the Chinese authorities and local communities.
