International Experts' Meeting for Rehabilitation of Earthquake-affected Sites in Indonesia

International Experts' Meeting for the Rehabilitation of Earthquake-affected Prambanan World Heritage Site and Taman Sari Water Castle in Yogyakarta and Central Java, Indonesia 

On 27 May 2006, an earthquake that measured 5.9 on the Richter scale hit Yogyakarta, the "Cultural Hub" of Indonesia, damaging severely its cultural heritage, including the Hindu temples of Prambanan World Heritage site and the Islamic-era Taman Sari Water Castle. Nine months after the earthquake, after completing the emergency phase, an International Experts' Meeting will be organized in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The objectives of the Meeting are:

• To provide technical recommendations for the rehabilitation of the cultural heritage of Yogyakarta, especially the Prambanan World Heritage Compounds and the Taman Sari Water Castle;
• To formulate a technical action plan for restoration works in the various cultural sites affected by the earthquake;
• To assist the Indonesian Government in establishing a global partnership for the post-earthquake rehabilitation of cultural heritage.

The meeting, co-organized by the Indonesian Department of Culture and Tourism and the UNESCO Office in Jakarta will be attended by 100 participants including 15 experts from Indonesia and selected international experts in the field of conservation and structural engineering.
