Int'l Symposium "Heritage Education – Capacity Building in Heritage Management"

14-18 June 2006

The heritage of mankind is a product of human knowledge, human ingenuity and technical developments and can only be protected by further interaction of those forces - this is the main point to highlight in the symposium. Education, management training and participation of different target groups for a sustainable use of local, regional and international heritage should thus be discussed and interpreted while simultaneously ways and strategies for its practical implementation will be developed.

The International Symposium "Heritage Education - Capacity Building in Heritage Management" will build on experiences and previous activities by the Chair of Intercultural Studies / UNESCO Chair in Heritage Studies at the Brandenburg University of Technology (BTU) Cottbus. It should provide a forum for academic discussions and the formulation of recommendations surrounding heritage education - mainly in regard of rising awareness and capacity building in heritage management and the identification of different target groups to be involved.

A second function of the symposium is the implementation and dissemination of management competencies acquired in the project "Development of Multi-disciplinary Management Strategies for Conservation and Use of Heritage Sites in Asia and Europe" (MUMA) which the EU Asia Link programme funds.

The symposium will take place in the framework of the international study programme World Heritage Studies - a unique interdisciplinary Master's Programme at the Brandenburg University of Technology reflecting all facets of the World Heritage Convention.

The symposium is under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Johanna Wanka, Minister for Science, Research and Culture of the State of Brandenburg, Germany.
