With the generous support of the Government of Flanders (Belgium), UNESCO has developed the World Heritage Online Map Platform, the pilot of a Geographic Information System (GIS) for World Heritage. This monitoring tool, linked to existing UNESCO databases, displays georeferenced boundaries of World Heritage sites and their buffer zones, and allows for basic cartographic operations. The platform, intended for State Parties, site managers, Advisory Bodies, UNESCO and other heritage and non-heritage stakeholders, will be officially presented at this side event through a brief demonstration its capabilities. Invited experts will delve into the advantages and challenges of the use of geospatial technologies for World Heritage management.
