Belize City, Belize 15-17 August 2001

Event and Objectives

Marine Environmental Education Programme, Belize

Fifteen youth were chosen to participate in the 3-day World Heritage Marine Environmental Program.

The objective was to share information with youths about the marine environment especially around the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve, a World Heritage Site in Laughing Bird Cay.

Participants

10 students and 5 "out of school" youths from disadvantaged backgrounds were chosen to take part in the program. They all participated in activities to increase their knowledge and awareness of marine biodiversity and they went on several field trips.

Outcome

The program was a huge success and the students all said they were going to share what they had learned with their schools and families. Some even said they wanted to become marine scientists and protect coral reefs in Belize and around the world.
