Sub regional Workshop in Northeast Asia on World Heritage Education

Beijing, China, 11-13 August 2005


The Workshop was convened in the framework of the Associated Schools Project (ASP) with the third sub-regional meeting carrying the theme of "World Heritage Education"


  • to promote better and deeper understanding in World Heritage Education and relevant teaching materials in Republic of Korea, Democratic Peoples' Republic of Korea, Japan, China and Mongolia
  • to enhance mutual understanding in East Asian countries through common concern for World Heritage Education by exchanging and sharing information and experiences in ASPnet activities for World Heritage Education on a national and sub-regional basis
  • to implement programs aimed at enhancing the awareness about World Heritage Education among various actors, teachers, students, and relevant institutions
  • to help strengthen the capacities of ASPnet teachers and officers in conducting activities for World Heritage Education, and to strengthen the dialogue and collaboration among teachers/teaching institutions/schools, culture managers, museums, heritage site managers, interested individuals and organizations in the local communities
  • to share and learn from the successful and innovative experiences of ASPnet schools applying World Heritage Education within school curricula and as extra-curricula activities as introduced by the UNESCO World Heritage Education Kit and other/own incentives such as the development of effective educational approaches and teaching materials
  • To contribute to the integration of World Heritage Education not only at ASPnet schools but all major educational institutions in the country and in the region
  • To enhance the cooperation and information exchange within the framework of World Heritage Education in the region, among schools and educational institutions as well as between educational and cultural agents.

Workshop Recommendations

All the participants agreed on the need to enhance teacher training and deal with obstacles such as the lack of materials and institutional constraints. Numerous ideas on possible joint-programs at sub-regional level were put forward:

Developing concrete programs to create networks

  • Bilateral and multilateral exchange programs (study visit to selected World Heritage sites, exchange of teachers and trainers-multilateral/Sister & Brother World Heritage sites)
  • Conducting more trainings for teachers - developing national ‘mobile' teams for teacher training with support/input from people from culture offices, site management and museums
  • Programs to encourage young people to become Heritage Guardians and Young Culture Ambassadors
  • Cooperation programs between site management and schools/community;
  • Programs that develop links among and between ASP institutions and UNESCO clubs and federation schools;
  • Communication programs using ICT's and website.

Advocacy and Research on innovative approaches and modalities

  • Study and dissemination of best practices especially on putting World Heritage Education (WHE) into the curriculum and extra-curriculum activities
  • Combining peace education with WHE
  • Develop and disseminate more local teaching/interpretative materials on WH sites and indexed to different school levels; add more information on WH sites in textbooks and design in a manner that arouses young people's interest
  • Increase the number of ASP schools, including universities and involve them in WHE activities
  • Media Campaign focused on WHE and educational value; reach-out to rural areas using different media support (i.e. radio) and relate WH sites to a wider range of living situations for different audiences
  • Develop family oriented educational programs - museum/site tour can be a good family education


41 participants, of which 25 teachers, professors, ASPnet co-ordinators and other educational sector workers; and 16 representatives from UNESCO WHC, Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU), Metropolitan Museum of Manila, department of Ministry of Education (China), Chinese National Commission for UNESCO, UNESCO Office Beijing and the Beijing Academy of Educational Sciences.
