World Heritage Review Focuses on Climate Change

The 42nd issue of the World Heritage Review, published in June 2006, focuses on the issues of climate change and World Heritage Sites.  A background on the issues is given in a feature article which discusses coral reefs under threat, rising sea levels, storms and ‘extreme weather events,' and how the World Heritage Committee is trying to deal with the threats to World Heritage. There is also an interview with Mr. Klaus Töpfer, UN Under-Secretary-General and former Head of UNEP, who explains the importance of biodiversity conventions to work together to respond to the challenge of climate change.  In addition, the increased effects of desertification on the mosques of Timbuktu, Mali are highlighted.
