Training for national, regional and local authorities in the implementation of the World Heritage Convention.

Objectives

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) joined the World Heritage Convention in 1998. This national seminar aims to assist national experts, technicians serving the conservation and management of cultural and natural heritage properties to have a better understanding of the World Heritage Convention and its works.

Results

The seminar took place in and around the vicinity of Pyongyang and Nampo City from 04 to 08 October 1999. It was attended by over 60 of DPRK’s leading scientists, technicians and specialists in the field of heritage conservation and management. Two international experts (one for cultural heritage, from Musée Guimet in France, and one for natural heritage, from Australia) gave lectures on the Convention, heritage conservation and World Heritage nominations and visited a number of heritage sites.

Following this seminar, the national authorities prepared a publication for the introduction to the Convention, including information on basic conservation practices and checklist for maintenance of cultural heritage sites. The World Heritage Convention and its related Operational Guidelines have been translated into Korean. DPRK submitted its first Tentative List in 2000.
