46 COM Side Event: The World Heritage Convention and the demonstration of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC)

24 July 2024

The UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the International Indigenous Peoples’ Forum on World Heritage (IIPFWH) are co-organizing a side event during the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee entitled “The World Heritage Convention and the demonstration of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC)” on 24 July 2024 | Room 1 MR 6, from 18:15 (after the plenary) to 19:45. Interpretation will be provided in English, French and Spanish.

Free, Prior and Informed Consent is central to respecting the rights and interests of Indigenous Peoples, and a keystone in the architecture of a rights-based approach in the processes of identification, nomination, management and protection of World Heritage properties. This event is an opportunity to discuss how Free, Prior and Informed Consent can be systematically implemented in the World Heritage context and serve as an example for heritage conservation in general.
