REF.: WHC/3/CL4 Permanent Delegations cc: National Commission for UNESCO CIRCULAR LETTER TO STATES PARTIES OF THE WORLD HERITAGE CONVENTION Sir/Madam, Subject: Plaques to commemorate the inclusion of properties in the World Heritage List As you know, paragraph 126 of the Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention recommends strongly that on each site inscribed on the World Heritage List, plaques to commemorate the inscription be apposed at a place most appropriate. Each plaque must bear the logos of UNESCO and the World Heritage Convention, with a reference to the date of inscription of the site, so that the public can be informed of its outstanding universal value and made aware of the need for its long-term preservation. Mr Federico Mayor, Director-General of UNESCO, has requested that these plaques be systematically produced and installed in each site inscribed on the World Heritage List. We should, therefore, be grateful if you could let us know before 1 October 1996, what are the properties in your country inscribed on the World Heritage List on which plaques have already been apposed, as well as the measures foreseen to install them on those sites on which they are still missing. With many thanks in advance for your kind cooperation in this matter, please accept Sir/Madam, the assurances of my highest consideration. Bernd von Droste Director World Heritage Centre BvD:nd *[EOF]
