NICHOLAS STANLEY-PRICE

Trained as an archaeologist, carried out archaeological research and administration in the East Mediterranean and Middle East for 12 years. He held posts in archaeological administration and research in Jerusalem and the Sultanate of Oman. He then was on the staff of ICCROM, the international conservation organization in Rome (1982-1986) and the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles (1987 - 1995), specializing in archaeological conservation and professional education. After two years as an independent consultant, he joined the Institute of Archaeology at University College London where he taught site conservation and management (1998-2000), introducing a new M.A. programme on the topic. Since August, 2000, he has been Director-General of ICCROM in Rome.

The books he has edited include “Conservation on archaeological excavations” (1984) and "Preventive measures during excavation and site protection” (1986; both published by ICCROM), and (with M. Kirby Talley and A. Melucco) “Historical and philosophical issues in conservation of cultural heritage” (Getty Conservation Institute, 1996).
He has also published many articles on archaeology and conservation. He founded and edits the quarterly journal “Conservation and management of archaeological sites”. He has specialized in the conservation and management of sites with rock art, while working as a lecturer and consultant for national heritage authorities in the USA, Lebanon, Portugal, Argentina, Chile and the Philippines.
