Sadettin Tantan, the mayor of Istanbul's historic Fatih district since 1994, was born in 1941 in Sapanca and graduated from the Police Academy at Anadolu University before obtaining additional degrees in business administration. Tantan joined the police force in 1964 and headed the Narcotics Bureau and City Police in Eskisehir, Bursa and Istanbul. He was chief of police in Giresun and Tekirdag before becoming head of the Inspection Bureau of the Istanbul Police Headquarters from 1989 to 1994. Since becoming mayor he has launched a major campaign to revitalise Fatih in a combined effort to provide improved housing for the poor and preserve the historic sector's vernacular architecture, adding a new dimension to cultural heritage preservation in Istanbul.
