Yves Dauge, an urbanist and politician who has been mayor
of Chinon in France's Loire Valley since 1989, was
in charge of France's "great works" or Grands Travaux
during the first term of President François Mitterrand,
when La Villette science and industrial park and museum complex,
the Louvre expansion, the Musée d'Orsay and the Grande Arche
de la Défense, among others, were initiated. He was also director of urbanism
and landscapes of the French Ministry of Infrastructure and
the president of the inter-ministerial commission on cities.
Dauge, who was born in 1935, studied at Harvard University's Institute
of World Affairs, has degrees in law and political science.
He has magnificently transformed the centre of Chinon through
an aggressive historic preservation programme.
