The AWHF is proud to have organised a successful expert workshop on World Heritage and Sustainable Development. From 23 to 25 May, the AWHF invited 60 experts to discuss the relation between World Heritage and Sustainable Development. The workshop, which was organised together with the South African Department of Environmental Affairs and Department of Arts and Culture, and the Peace Parks Foundation, gathered representatives from African Governments, the extractive industry and the conservation community.
The experts discussed possible solutions to the issue of how to effectively conserve Africa’s magnificent natural and cultural heritage, while at the same time enable necessary development in the region.
The three day workshop resulted in a set of recommendations which will be discussed during the ”International Conference on World Heritage and Sustainable Development: the role of local communities” in South Africa in September 2012.
The expert workshop is the second of three steps of the World Heritage and Sustainable Development Programme.
