UNESCO publishes a conservation manual and a study on the mausoleums for the Rehabilitation of Timbuktu

In the framework of UNESCO’s Action plan for the safeguarding of Mali’s cultural heritage adopted in February 2013, and as part of the World Heritage Earthen Architecture Programme (WHEAP 2007-2017), the World Heritage Centre has now published the Conservation Manual and the Study on Timbuktu’s Mausoleums.

Both publications compile valuable documentation on this prominent World Heritage earthen town, gathered by Italian experts in close consultation with local experts during various missions between 2002 and 2008 - long before the damage and destruction of the 2012 occupation by armed groups occurred.

The publications, both in French, contain a number of yet unpublished designs, photographs and analytical studies that will contribute to UNESCO and Mali’s joint efforts for the planning and implementation of Timbuktu’s greater rehabilitation project.
