Development and implementation of projects
Ensuring that World Heritage sites sustain their outstanding universal value is an increasingly challenging mission in today’s complex world, where sites are vulnerable to the effects of uncontrolled urban development, unsustainable tourism practices, neglect, natural calamities, pollution, political instability, and conflict. The World Heritage Centre cannot do the work that needs to be done to preserve these important World Heritage sites without the commitment of individuals and institutions, big and small, throughout the world.
In addition to sites on the List of World Heritage in Danger, World Heritage Programmes particularly in need of attention are: earthen architecture, forests, modern heritage, small island developing states, marine programme, sustainable tourism, World Heritage cities and education.
