Small Island Developing States Programme
From 10 to 14 January 2005 the United Nation's "International Meeting to Review the Implementation of the Barbados Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States" took place in Port Louis, Mauritius. At that meeting UNESCO led Plenary Panel three on "The Role of Culture in the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States". The meeting concluded with the adoption of the Mauritius Strategy for the Further Implementation of the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States.
In a direct follow-up to the Mauritius meeting, the World Heritage Centre designed the World Heritage Programme for SIDS, aiming at a coordination of efforts to exchange information on and implement the Mauritius Strategy within the context of the 1972 World Heritage Convention and the action plans for the Caribbean and the Pacific. This Programme was adopted at the 29th session of the World Heritage Committee in Durban, South Africa, in 2005 (Decision 29 COM 5B).
