Capacity Building workshop for Indian Ocean SIDS: Enhancing capacities for the integration of World Heritage site management in the sustainable development of local communities.

Within the framework of the Japanese Funds-in-Trust project "Capacity Building to Support the Conservation of World Heritage Sites and Enhance Sustainable Development of Local Communities in Small Island Developing States (SIDS)" the World Heritage Centre in collaboration with UNESCO Dar-es-Salaam office will organize a sub-regional capacity building workshop for Indian Ocean SIDS to enhance their capacities to integrate World Heritage site management within the sustainable development of local communities, which will be held in Mahé (Seychelles) from 30 April to 3 May 2012.

The workshop will cover the African SIDS of the Western Indian Ocean, being the Comoros, Mauritius and the Seychelles, inviting also the Maldives and Madagascar. The workshop aims to identify and address the specific capacity needs of each of the five participating island states and, based on this needs assessment, future activities at the national and regional level shall be outlined for future planning and implementation.  An important emphasis shall be given to improved regional communication, exchange, and cooperation to use regional resources for joint and mutual capacity development.
